Performance and animated documentary within El Peso de Mis Vecinas, translating lived experience into vocal and performative form
Las voces de mis vecinas is a performative and audiovisual work structured around the act of preparing and serving tea, unfolding as a situation of shared attention in which voice, gesture, and hospitality intersect.
Within this setting, the work brings together different vocal registers: the artist’s own voice, songs developed during the research process, and autobiographical material. These elements are composed into a layered structure in which voices overlap, resonate, and transform.
Rather than presenting individual testimonies, the performance constructs a relational vocal space, where experiences of cross-border movement, labour, and proximity are articulated through rhythm, repetition, and breath.
Alongside the live work, a short, animated, sung documentary translates this material into a musical form, in which the songs carry the narrative content and the animation the unspeakable, articulating the living conditions and migratory desires of the Moroccan women involved in the project.
Forms
Performance — a live work structured around the preparation and serving of tea, combining singing, narration, and performative action. The piece brings together the artist’s voice, songs developed during the research, and autobiographical material into a layered vocal composition
Sung animated documentary (12 min): an unpublished short film structured as a musical composition, in which the songs and drawings developed during the research become the primary narrative material. Through their lyrics and vocal expression, the film articulates the living conditions and migratory desires of the Moroccan women involved in the project
These forms operate as parallel articulations of the same material: while the performance constructs a relational and situated space of encounter, the film condenses the work into a musical and audiovisual form.
Context
The performance was presented in different contexts, including exhibitions and performances at Piramidón art center, MACBA, Festival Errant, the Museu de Sant Pol de Mar, and internationally at 365 Gallery in Viena.
The project received support from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the PEI Program MACBA.
