A daily performative exercise developed within Doing Nothing Lab, exploring non-action and alternative experiences of time
Do Nothing Every Day is an early performative experiment consisting of one hour of intentional non-activity carried out every day during a period of 30 days.
Developed together with Clara Garí, the project explored “doing nothing” as a daily collective practice situated between refusal, discipline, humour, resistance, and survival strategy. Rather than approaching inactivity as passivity, the work proposed the deliberate interruption of productivity through repeated and shared non-action.
The project marks one of the earliest manifestations of what later evolved into the Doing Nothing Lab, introducing repetition, performative routines, online documentation, and collective inactivity as central artistic methodologies.
Forms
Daily performances of doing nothing — one hour of intentional inactivity repeated every day during 30 consecutive days
Shared online blog — a digital archive documenting texts, images, reflections, and traces generated throughout the daily performative process
Performative routine — repetition used as a method for collectively interrupting productivity and re-negotiating experiences of time
These forms operate together as a minimal and durational performative structure investigating inactivity as an embodied and collective practice.
Context
The project was developed in collaboration with Clara Garí and constitutes one of the foundational experiments leading towards The Laboratory of Doing Nothing.
Through its simple and repetitive structure, the work introduced many of the concerns that later became central to the broader research line: exhaustion, suspension, collective non-productivity, performative routine, and alternative temporalities.
Do Nothing II was presented in November 2015 at POGON – Zagreb Center for Independent Culture and Youth during the group exhibition Long Live Labour curated by Leila Topić, alongside works by Željko Badurina, Siniša Labrović, Vlado Martek, Antonio Paucar, Julien Prévieux, Oliver Ressler, Mladen Stilinović, Péter Szabó, David Thorne, Marko Vojnić Gin, Damir Žižić, Kristian Kožul, and Fokus Grupa. Exhibition design by Rafaela Dražić.
