A collective publication constructing speculative futures through situated knowledge and shared imagination
Utopian Almanack is a collaborative publication that takes the form of a calendar, reimagining time as a space of speculation, prediction, and collective projection.
Drawing on the structure of traditional almanacs—combining practical knowledge, poetic language, and future-oriented thinking—the work reflects on how systems of time are constructed and how they shape our understanding of the present and the future.
Developed in collaboration with participants from Metzineres, the project proposes alternative temporalities grounded in lived experience, particularly from positions situated at the margins.
Process
The project unfolds through a series of hosted encounters, in which participants engage in writing, reflection, and speculative exercises.
Together, they generate predictions, proverbs, recipes, and fictional future events, constructing a shared body of knowledge that moves between imagination and lived reality. These contributions are not unified into a single narrative but remain plural, reflecting different perspectives and experiences.
Through this process, hosting becomes a way of producing time collectively—allowing alternative futures to emerge from situated voices.
Forms
The research is translated into a publication that operates across visual and textual forms:
Almanack / calendar: a trilingual publication (Catalan, Spanish, English) presenting predictions, celestial events, and fictional holidays spanning the years 2024–2074
Drawings: a series of geometric clock-like images by the artist, reflecting on systems of time and measurement
Collages: visual compositions developed from participants’ desires and projections, forming a speculative archive of future imaginaries
These elements operate together as a temporal device, combining narrative, visual, and speculative structures.
Context
The project was developed in collaboration with Metzineres in Barcelona and forms part of a broader inquiry into marginalised knowledge, collective imagination, and alternative ways of constructing reality.
It extends the artist’s practice into the field of publication as a space for hosting, narration, and the circulation of shared visions.
