A collective workshop based think tank and performative research environment developed within the Doing Nothing Lab
Laboratorio del No Hacer is one of the central manifestations of the Doing Nothing Lab, developed initially as a six-week workshop during the artist’s residency at Hangar.
Conceived as a collective research environment, the project brought together artists, cultural workers, and participants to reflect on labour, exhaustion, productivity, and inactivity within artistic and contemporary social contexts. Through interviews, discussions, non-activities, collective exercises, and performative situations, the laboratory investigated alternative relationships to time, usefulness, and social value.
Rather than producing a single artwork, the project unfolded as a process generating multiple forms, including podcasts, written scores, public actions, performative talks, collective situations of doing nothing, and photographic documentation of suspended economic activity.
The laboratory later expanded through workshops, presentations, and international invitations, transforming into an evolving pedagogical and performative research structure.
Forms
Six-week workshop laboratory — a collaborative research process developed with artists and participants during the residency at Hangar
Three-day public presentation — an exhibition and activation of the research process at Blueproject Foundation.
Three day master seminar - in collaboration with Pol Capdevila at EINA, school of arts
International adaptations — presentations ESC Medienkunstcenter in Graz and at the Pergine Festival in Italy.
Context
The project was initiated during the artist’s long-term residency at Hangar between 2015 and 2017 and presented publicly at Blueproject Foundation in 2017.
Parallel collaborations and pedagogical extensions were developed at EINA together with Pol Capdevila. The project later expanded internationally through invitations to Graz, Austria, and Italy, where the laboratory format continued evolving through workshops, public actions, and performative situations.
Within the broader trajectory of The Laboratory of Doing Nothing, this project established many of the collective, pedagogical, and performative methodologies that later became central to the artist’s practice.
